Six people were killed this morning after a shooting spree by a 43 year old Kosovo Albanian immigrant. The purpetrator, Ibrahim Shkupolli, shot dead 4 members of staff at the Prisma branch at the Sello shopping centre in Esbo/Espoo. His ex-girlfriend was found shot dead at a private residence in Esbo along with the culprit himself.

That another shooting tragedy has come about again in our country must be the final and ultimate call to action for our politicians. Surely it must now be time to completely ban private-ownership of all handguns. There can be no justifiable reason for a private citizen to own a handgun. They are not required in hunting. Only the police and competent authorities (such as the military) should be permitted to have them.

As for hunting weapons, regulations on licensing need to be tightened up. People should be investigated in a far more stringent and detailed manner before they are granted a hunting weapon licence. Hunting should be the only reason people are permitted the ownership of a gun.

It is now time for our politicians to show leadership. But, I question as to whether the rural-based Centre Party’s prime minister Matti Vanhanen (who has said he will step down in the summer) and his party colleagues will hear this tragedy’s call to action. I am not sure they are up to providing the leadership required on this matter. Let’s hope the other parties and civil society pressure them into action.

Sorry for the lack of content lately! Busy times at work.

I just want to wish everyone a peaceful Christmas and happy new year 2010!
